Town Council (February 9)

  • Meeting with state legislators

    • Representative Samuel Azzinaro, who backed down from supporting mail-in ballots for disabled voters after being challenged by Councilor LaPietra, saying that it wasn’t his bill — he only reviewed and signed it. Okay? Thanks for protecting us from disabled voters enjoying the convenience of voting from home?

    • Representative Brian Kennedy discussed the governor’s budget and changing the date of this year’s primary election. He also answered questions about a potential millionaire tax.

    • Representative Tina Spears, who is pushing for a social media age verification law, and I wish she wouldn’t!

    • Senator Victoria Gu highlighted the town’s desire for short-term rental regulation (held up due to litigation) and need for coastal resiliency support. She responded to questions about the commuter rail project and HUD intervention in local tenant disputes.

  • Unproductive yelling about increasing sewer rates in support of a mandatory improvement project. I say “unproductive” because they ultimately voted 6-1, with the lone dissenter being term-limited Councilor Aiello, who lives outside the sewer district and was mad about it. 🫡

  • Arguing about which committee/commission/board/secret cabal should evaluate a use for the former Water Wizz property, eventually settling on the Planning Board with the inclusion of the Rec Board.

  • Executive meeting about litigation with the Watch Hill Fire District.
