Minding Westerly’s business so you don’t have to 😁

Every month, you’ll receive updates about local news and events, with a particular focus on town governance. This is the introductory letter!

Preparing for the election

The general election is on November 5, 2024. Are you registered to vote? Do you know your polling place? You can find more information here.

You may have received in the mail a voter information handbook for both the state and local ballot questions. Personally, I don’t find these to be particularly helpful; it seems like they just rephrase the questions without adding much description. It’s more useful to have the social, political, and economic context for the things we’re voting on.

That’s why I’ve compiled a more comprehensive voting guide for our Westerly-specific ballot. In it, you’ll find additional information about the ballot questions - both state and local - and details about each of the candidates running for town council and school committee. Let me know what you think!

You can also see how I will be voting. Transparency is important to me, especially if I’m dispensing guidance to assist others.

Going Forward

My goals for this newsletter are:

  • Provide a synopsis of the meetings of our local government, particularly the town council and school committee.

  • Maintain a voting record for each politician following the upcoming election, which will be regularly updated and made available to you.

  • Share local journalism on Westerly-specific issues, such as the ongoing shore access controversy, book banning in our schools and library, and so on.

  • Create commentary on all of the above, including, hopefully, readers’ perspectives as well.

That’s all for now! You can expect the next newsletter on November 11th, the Monday after the election. 😨
